European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
