During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an bold commencement to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The new figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
