Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
