World Series Final Game Attracts 51M Viewers Across the US, Canada and Japanese Markets.

The nail-biting extended clash that saw the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays 5-4 averaged a total 51M watchers across the United States, Canadian, and Japanese territories. MLB announced this is the most-watched Fall Classic Game 7 after the 1991 edition showdown featuring the Twins and Atlanta Braves.

Television Ratings Breakdown

Last Saturday’s memorable contest drew 27.33 million viewers on Fox networks, its Spanish-language channel and Fox’s digital services. Per Nielsen, it was the second most-watched program of the week.

It also is the top-rated World Series game after the 2017 edition final game involving the Dodgers and Astros, which averaged over 29 million. This marks a 16% increase compared to the previous finale featuring the Washington Nationals and Astros, which drew 23.19 million.

In the Nielsen ratings, the sixth game ranked fourth, the fourth game was seventh, Game 5 came in 8th, and the third game finished in thirteenth position.

Global Viewership Numbers

In the Canadian market, the game averaged 11.6M watchers on Sportsnet and the French-language TVA Sports channel. This made it the highest-rated English program in Canada since the 2010 edition Winter Olympics.

In the Japanese market, where the final contest began at 9 PM local time, it averaged 12M. This came after the previous Friday’s sixth game – where World Series Most Valuable Player Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one run in six innings – drew over 13 million spectators, making it the highest-rated Fall Classic game on a single network in the country.

Overall Averages and Trends

The full seven-match series averaged 15.71M viewers on Fox, a 2% increase from last year’s Dodgers versus Yankees series. This represents the initial instance after 2015 and 2016 that the Fall Classic has recorded audience increases for two straight seasons.

Counting the opening game telecast on the Univision network, the total US viewership was over 16 million. The total World Series viewership in the Japanese market was 9.7 million and 8.1M in the Canadian market.

The complete playoffs on Fox, FS1 and FS2 drew over 8 million watchers, an eight percent rise over last year and Fox’s best postseason performance after 2017.

MLB reported that the World Series was broadcast in 203 nations and regions by forty-four broadcasting partners in 16 different languages.
